Our whirlwind tour ended the next day at the little-known area of Powder Mountain near Ogden , about an hour north of Salt Lake City . The name says it all – we had the mountain to ourselves for run after run of nearly untracked powder. By 2 p.m. we'd already had what would more than a full day of skiing at any other resort. My aching legs were glad when Nathan suggested we knock off early. Then he delivered the punchline: We had a 2:30 tee time at Wolf Creek Golf Course at the base of the canyon. What a treat to ski perfect snow all morning, lose a bunch of balls on a beautiful course in the afternoon, then head to the airport for an evening flight home.
A few days later I was bragging to some friends in L.A. about my trip – skiing the same day I arrived, skiing and golfing in the same day – when a buddy upstaged me. “Ah, that's nothing,” he said. "The first time I went to Utah , I caught the dawn patrol surfing at home, jumped on a 9 a.m. flight at Salt Lake , skied for three hours and still had time for nine holes before dark. And that was just the first day.”
